Music, art and dedication is what made Capetonian hip-hop trio call themselves MAD Square, and they plan to demonstrate those qualities with their performance at the Do Cool Party this weekend in KwaNobuhle.

The Uitenhage gig will be hosted tomorrow night from 6pm by the Forever Lloyd Group in partnership with Phat.

The MAD Square trio consists of members Dimitri “Lodi” Louw, Xavier “Chaos” Hartzenberg and Justin “Cleva” Louw – Justin and Dimitri are not related. They will be sharing the stage with 24 artists from around the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in a musical showcase of different genres such as kwaito, rhythm and blues, and pop.

Forever Lloyd Group business solutions manager Valerie Sebalo says audience members can expect to be entertained as all the acts were selected for their stage presence.

“We will have a few DJs to keep everyone on their feet throughout the event. These artists have all been handpicked due to their ability on stage and with that we are sure it will be a performance not to be missed,” Sebalo said.

Originally from Belhar in the Cape flats, MAD Square have been active for over seven years and performed at various events including this year’s Alliance Francaise Street Music Festival in Richmond Hill and the Mandela Bay Music Festival.

They have also featured on television shows such as Cape Town’s EK SE and national youth show Hectic Nine-9 which airs on SABC 2.

Louw says their shared love for hip-hop music was what led them to form the group.

“All three of us have always just had a love for hip-hop music and we used to see each other at various hip-hop shows in and around our community, so we became friends and took things from there,” Louw said.

He says the name of the group describes what they do musically.

“We originally called ourselves the Three Masons until we found out that another group was using this name.

“We eventually ended up using MAD Square with the first three letters being an acronym for Music, Art and Dedication, because that’s what we showcase through our talent.

“A friend suggested that we add the Square at the end to make the name more appealing.”

The trio will headline at the Do Cool Party tomorrow at the Jeff Masemola hall in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage from 6pm. Tickets are available at from R30.
