NMMU is marking the 10th anniversary this month of the death of leading lyric tenor and former honorary music professor Deon van der Walt with a free memorial concert tomorrow.
The 2015 Deon Van der Walt Memorial Concert will be held at 1pm at the South Campus Auditorium. It will feature soprano Antoinette Olivier, tenor Chris Mostert and Kobus Buys on piano.
Van der Walt was the first male South African to accomplish the so-called “grand slam” of opera, having sung in the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden in London, Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna, La Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.
He was also a prolific oratorio and lieder singer, collaborating with the best artists the musical world had to offer.He left a large recorded legacy, both published and unpublished.
The works performed tomorrow will be the as well as
by Robert Schumann, followed by the by Pieter de Villiers.
