PE Music Society hosting top instrumentalists
THE Port Elizabeth Music Society’s concert series for this year is well under way, with some exciting highlights to look to in the coming forward months.
The society has eight concerts with excellent national and international artists on its calendar. The first, Canadian virtuoso concert violinist Susanne Hou, performed here last month.
Tomorrow at 7.30pm the society will welcome pianist Spencer Myer, one of the most important US artists of his generation, who has achieved critical acclaim around the globe. Myer will also do a free lecturing demonstration tomorrow from 1pm to 2pm in the auditorium.
Soloist and chamber musician Caleb Vaughn-Jones, originally from South Carolina but now living in the Bay, will be next to enchant audiences with his exploratory grasp of the cello with an anything-but-classical approach to the classical repertoire. He will be partnered on the piano by music society chairwoman Erika Bothma, on April 9.
Another excellent pianist, Awadagin Pratt, is due here on May 14. A professor of piano at the University of Cincinnati, Pratt is acclaimed for his musical insight.
The formidable duo of Ben Schoeman (piano) and Anzel Gerber (cello) will grace the music society stage on June 7.
Schoeman is regarded as one of South Africa’s foremost pianists while Gerber is increasingly performing on internationally renowned stages.
On August 17, the Wits Trio of Zanta Hofmeyr (violin), Maciej Lacny (cello) and Malcolm Nay (piano) will be here, followed by Belgium-based violinist Hrachya Avanesyan on September 29. Avanesyan plays on the violin of Antonio Stradivarius, “Piatti”, dating back to 1717.
At the final concert on October 27, the Primakov-Lavrova Duo, two pianists superbly matched in technical and musical prowess, will take the stage.
Ticket prices per concert are R75 adults, R60 pensioners, R25 students and R20 scholars. All concerts are at the NMMU South Campus auditorium.
