FORMER Bay comedian Barry Hilton is one of the stars of The Live Series, a 75-minute comedy special launched on DStv’s Box Office this week. Each show will feature one of the country’s top comedians performing in front of a live audience, with Hilton the first in the series.
In his episode, available for download since Monday, “The Cousin” delivers an hour-and-a-half of stand-up comedy touching on everything from load-shedding through to selfies.
The series is a project of award-winning production company Mannequin Pictures, with producer Delon Bakker having worked with more than 40 South African comedians, including Joey Rasdien, Loyiso Gola and Riaad Moosa.
Developed especially for Box Office, the series will help them explore new terrain – and sees Box Office following in the footsteps of entertainment giant Netflix.
Box Office is a satellite-based video-on-demand (VOD) service that offers DStv premium subscribers additional entertainment by allowing them to rent Hollywood blockbusters and other exclusive offerings on their PVR decoders from home.
Hilton, who was based in Port Elizabeth for many years before moving to Hermanus more than a year ago, was the first South African comedian to perform at the legendary London’s Comedy Store, in 2001. He has presented at the annual Comics Choice Awards, hosted television shows, starred in two films and won numerous awards, including the 2013 Comics Choice Lifetime Achiever Award.
He still regularly visits the Bay and will be back here with his new show, The Way I See It, at the Boardwalk amphitheatre on March 13. Tickets are available at Computicket.
