La Femme peeks into the Walmer home of hairstylist Barry Morris ahead of his retirement this month and found it light, bright and super-stylish
SINCE opening Crimpers Hair Design 43 years ago, Barry Morris has become well known around Port Elizabeth, having trained many of the city’s top names.
He is just as stylish at home as at work, with his wife, Di, an interior designer known for her clean, modern lines.
They have been married 44 years and “without her, starting and running Crimpers would have been far more difficult,” he said.
“Without her art background and later on as an interior designer I wonder if my salon’s image would have been what it is. Not to mention her help with the administration which is my pet hate!”
The creative edge of this couple shows in light, bright rooms at their home at Little Walmer Golf Estate.
Our style in five words: Contemporary, colourful, uncluttered, comfortable, warm (and welcoming) – with a touch of humour.
On our bucket list: Travel, travel and more travel.
Best colour: Di goes for red, while Barry would opt for “any colour that works”.
Pet décor peeve: Brown leather sofas (especially those with overscaled arms) for Di.
Pet hair peeve: If you want to irritate Barry, then answer your cell phone while someone is cutting your hair; be a non-hairdresser who thinks they are a hairdresser; or a mother who comes in with a daughter for a matric hairstyle – and interferes.
Our indulgence: Contemporary fine dining.
Although he is handing over the scissors to Alfie Pegram, the former president of Intercoiffure keeps up with what is trending in the hair world:
Celebrity with the most gorgeous hair: Sofia Vergara – “I don’t know if she has extensions in but I still think her hair looks good.”
Celebrity with the worst hair: Megan Fox.
Celebrity or style Crimpers is most often asked to copy: currently Taylor Swift.
After a lifetime in the trade – Barry started snipping and styling at 14 in his father’s barbershop in London – he will now have time for his other interests, such as photography and travel. Travel plans will include a visit to their two children and four grandchildren in Australia.
