‘TIS the season to spread some cheer and the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day project, which is hoping to expand to Port Elizabeth next year, is encouraging people to donate “good-wool”.
Founder Carolyn Steyn said the knitting project was launched almost a year ago to collect 67 blankets to distribute on Nelson Mandela Day in July this year.
“To my surprise, we managed to collect more than 6000 blankets, thanks to our global base of loyal supporters, or ‘KnitWits’, for Madiba’,” Steyn said.
She said the life of Madiba touched the lives of many people in South Africa, so much so that even the ones serving time for criminal offences felt the need to involve themselves in the campaign to do good in honour of the great man.
This part of the initiative was launched at Zonderwater prison in Pretoria last month.
Prisoners crocheted a number of squares and were eager to make thousands more, Steyn said.
There are various drop-off points in the country for those seeking to make a contribution. But for those living in Port Elizabeth, the nearest drop-off point is in Grahamstown.
The project is looking for someone to co-ordinate its efforts in the Bay area.
