THE Eastern Cape’s only specialist culinary cook-off festival will take place this weekend in Bathurst after residents rallied together to save the event.
Now in its third year, the Bathurst Country Affair provides an economic boost to the 1820 Settler village.
Organiser Tanya Schenk said yesterday people had raised thousands of rands to ensure the event went ahead after news spread that it would no longer happen because sponsorship could not be found.
“The community has raised over R24000 to make this event happen; it’s really goose-bump stuff.
“The idea is to boost local business by creating a busy time for the village out of season.
“Ninety-five per cent of the businesses in Bathurst rely solely on tourism to survive. It is their bread and butter.” – David Macgregor
