Musicians to wow Durban

SOME of Port Elizabeth's most talented young musicians jetted off to KwaZulu-Natal yesterday where they will bedazzle Durbanites with their music tonight.

Among the 15 musicians, all members of the National Youth Wind Orchestra, is talented percussionist Joshua Benjamin, 17.

Benjamin, a Grey High School matric pupil from Adcockvale, said he was honoured to take to the stage with his fellow musicians while celebrating the orchestra's 50th anniversary.

"The cool thing about being a percussionist is that I'm part of the rhythm division, which means that if I don't have it right, the team won't have rhythm."

Tonight's concert, sponsored by Sasol, will be held at Hilton College followed by a second performance tomorrow at the Durban Music School.

Sasol concert series spokes- woman Nobantu Nxumalo said the company annually sponsored a course for the members of youth orchestras.

"There are often few percussionists as wind instruments like the trumpet are generally more popular. All the musicians taking part in this [course] are really talented and have bright futures."

Benjamin hoped to continue with his music career while studying overseas next year.

"I plan to study overseas while still playing for various orchestras. I'm confident the National Youth Orchestra will continue to enhance my musical ability and pave the way to new heights." - Alvené du Plessis
