FRESHLYGROUND lead singer Zolani Mahola says she still finds it challenging at times to balance motherhood and her hectic music schedule.

Mahola, who gave birth to a baby boy, Zazi, 11 months ago, says, as a young mother she is still learning to adjust her responsibilities to fit her performance schedule.

But being a mom has not stopped Mahola, known for hits such as I'd Like and Pot Belly, from diversifying her showbusiness portfolio with a new film role.

Her first film, Cold Harbour, will be shown at the Durban International Film Festival, which starts on Monday and ends on July 27.

Cold Harbour also stars Tony Kgoroge and Fana Mokoena.

In the film, Port Elizabeth- born Mahola plays Camilla, a nurse who once had a relationship with lead character Sizwe, who is portrayed by Kgoroge.

"She has a child with Sizwe and, when they meet again, Camilla notices that she still has feelings for Sizwe. When I got the role, I was really itching for a television role," Mahola said.

"I still want to act in [a] television drama despite the busy schedule Freshlyground has."

The singer, whose breakout acting role was on the television series, Tsha Tsha, a few years ago, said she enjoyed working with Kgoroge.

After the debut at the festival, Cold Harbour is set to open in cinemas.

When on tour, Mahola travels with her nanny and son. This will be the case when Freshlyground kicks off their UK and Europe tour on July 18. - Patience Bambalele
