Candice's got dancing in her genes

WITH her dance show coming up next month, Walmer dance teacher and choreographer Candice Johnstone shared her favourite room with La Femme last week – aptly, her dance studio.

The founder and owner of the Candice Johnstone School of Dance said she has been dancing all her life.

"I don't remember a day I was not dancing while growing up. I've always loved to dance. After I finished school I went on to study dance at the-then Pretoria Technikon, now Tshwane University of Technology.

"I love my studio because it's where I can do what I want to do. It's my safe and creative space, an area of our home both my son and husband are banned from."

Johnstone, who teaches dance to Grade 10-12 pupils from Collegiate Girls', Pearson, Victoria Park and Theodor Herzl high schools from her home studio, started her academy about 12 years ago in Central.

Her new show Queen of Dance which will showcase classic contemporary and sassy jazz style will be held at the Port Elizabeth Opera House on June 13 and 14.

Previous shows include Dancers at Work, Dancers et Haute Couture, I Have a Dream and To the Pointe.

My style in five words: Classic, uncluttered, functional (must work for me), homely and elegant.

On my decor wish list: A piano. My home and my studio could do with a piano.

Favourite colour: For fabric definitely neutrals, I do not get bored with these but talking lipsticks ... the brighter the better!

Decor peeve: I hate cat or dog hair on a couch.

My decor indulgence: Fresh flowers, beautiful wallpaper and Jo Malone scented candles.

Favourite character in a movie or book: Nina Sayers played by Natalie Portman in Black Swan. I liked how she was able to so perfectly portray such a difficult role. I suppose, it also reminded me of some distant memories!
