A life and achievements celebrated in new book

A BOOK celebrating the life and work of Eastern Cape sculptress Maureen Quin will be launched at the GFI Gallery in Park Drive on Thursday evening this week.

Written by Virginia Reed, in conversation with the artist, the book Quin Sculptures is described as a "testimony to a passionate, prolific" artist whose work spans almost her entire life.

This year Quin turns 80 and she is still immersed in the world of art in her studio in Alexandria. So much so that last year she was commissioned to do a portrait of the late president Nelson Mandela for a garden of 20th century peace icons at New South Wales University, Australia.

The commission was put out to tender, Quin was chosen as the preferred artist and this sculpture already has been unveiled in Australia.

The book launch will be held at 5.30 for 6pm at GFI Gallery (formerly Ron Belling).
