THE Mercedes-Benz CLA AMG 4-Matic holds many surprises, the major one being the size of the engine. Expecting a mighty V8 engined tuned and built by AMG under the hood we were surprised to find a two litre twin-scroll turbo-charged engine of this super sexy-looking car.
But it is not any old turbo-charged 2 litre – the AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine is the world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production.
Following the successful A 45 AMG introduction, Mercedes-AMG now offers two high-performance cars powered by a four-cylinder engine.
Both new models provide an exciting introduction to the world of AMG. With output of 265kW and peak torque of 450 Newton metres, it is also very efficient for a super car with sports car performance and meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standards.
The engine is unmatched by any other mass-produced turbocharged four-cylinder engine worldwide. The power density of 133kW puts the high-performance turbo engine on par with the world’s most powerful super sports cars.
The high output and torque coupled with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive fitted as standard make for extremely dynamic performance.
The new engine is assembled entirely by hand according to AMG’s traditional “one man, one engine” philosophy – as shown by the AMG engine badge bearing the signature of the responsible engine fitter.
The car offers a fascinatingly sporty driving experience, characterised by impressive craftsmanship and individuality.
It completes the sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h.
And a major benefit of dumping the V8 for a four-cylinder is the fantastic fuel consumption figures.
Merc provided the CLA AMG, equipped with a Speedshift DCT 7-speed sports transmission, for World of Wheels to use for the drive to Knysna and back to Port Elizabeth for the recent GLA launch.
We managed to match Merc figures with a combined fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100km which puts the CLA 45 AMG at the top of its segment.
The overall drive experience is superb – comfort combined with performance is the hallmark of the vehicle.
It’s often a problem driving a high performance slowly in an urban area. Not so the CLA – no jerky or hesitant movements.
On the open road the car had oodles of power when overtaking and under emergency braking conditions it came to a safe stop.
The CLA 45 AMG comes with variable, performance-oriented AMG 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard. In developing this system, the focus was firmly on performance and dynamic spirit. The power transfer to the rear powertrain is provided by a compact power take-off unit (PTU) which is fully integrated into the seven-speed sports transmission.
