CROONER Loyiso Bala, who is originally from Uitenhage, returns to the Bay for a Good Friday concert at the Word of Faith Christian Centre tonight.
Bala takes to the stage for the opening of the Word of Faith Easter Conference, which starts today and ends on Sunday.
“I am excited to be performing in the Bay again, but sad because I won’t be spending much time with my family,” said Bala, who has a performance in Cape Town on Sunday.
“However Easter is very important to me because it is a celebration of Jesus, who died for me on the cross.” At first known for his smooth R&B voice, Bala has also become a gospel artist of note in recent years.
Having graduated top of his class at the Drakensberg Boys Choir, he went on to perform alongside the likes of international stars like John Legend, Brian McKnight and Elton John. Bala has even harmonised with international dignitaries like the late president Nelson Mandela, Sir Richard Branson, Gordon Brown, Bill Clinton and Oprah Winfrey. The winner of several best album/producer awards at the Metro FM Awards and at the South African Music Awards (Samas) was also nominated for the MTV awards, alongside superstars like Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Akon in 2008.
Bala enrolled at the Rhema Bible College in 2011 for a course, “Heart of Worship”.
“It [the course] helped shape my gospel career, which started a year after. I will be releasing my new gospel album and DVD, called Power, Love, Sound, at the end of May,” he said.
Tonight’s concert will benefit disadvantaged children in Port Elizabeth, with some of the proceeds going to Project Hope, a non-profit organisation that has served children of the greater community of the Helenvale, Bethelsdorp and Bloemendal areas for the past 10 years.
Tickets at R50 each are available at Computicket or from the church on William Moffett Expressway. – Louise Liebenberg, Additional reporting by Yoliswa Sobuwa
