Fayette's fabulous flowers steal show

WHAT is it about March, anyway? It feels like we've had three weeks of ululations, celebrations and all-round nonstop partying with event after event keeping the social scene buzzing.

A highlight this past week was the launch of that splendid creature Fayette Scherwinski's new decor, design and flower shop at the Boardwalk.

She treated guests to a floral demo outside the shop before she and Brett Hoppé pulled back the curtains to reveal the stunning interior. Jaw-dropping blooms bedecked every surface, with the piece de resistance a human floral display in the form of Kehly Windvogel magnificently draped in a wire-and-flower creation.

Fayette wore a mini-dress with black tights as it was a chilly evening. Fashion fundi Barbara Robertson rocked a leopard print skirt and so did another guest – I am not going to say who wore it better!

My weekend kicked off at Elizabeth Place with the Young and Leading Awards organised by Inkanuko Events. I'm all for recognising young do-gooders, but 8am on a Saturday is a mighty early start.

R&B artist Tyresse gave a great performance and Nosi Ncoyo, managing director of Vision for Women, gave a wonderfully encouraging speech while rocking a long coat with black leggings.

On Sunday, I went to a hip-hop event at the Opera House and it too was organised by and for the youngsters. There was loads of talent and so the poor turnout was a letdown.

Scribe Nceba Dladla was there with his wife, Nosithembelo, as their son, hip-hop star Azz Veritazz, was one of the performers. Reverend Xhanti Busakwe of St Thomas African Church in Uitenhage came along with his children and looked rather youthful himself in his khaki three-quarter pants and white shirt.

Bay TV kiddies show presenter Luvuyo Bhelu is a tour de force and made a fine MC. A group called Genious was genius and had me in tears with their song Hold On, Never Give Up.

Azz was the last act, and really fine, but did he have to burst out laughing in the middle of his performance? And c'mon, why feature your daddy on one of your tracks? Skinnerbek thinks Nceba should stick to being the good scribe he is and leave the singing to his son.

On Tuesday I attended the launch of the annual Splash Festival under the bridge at Happy Valley. The invite clearly stated it was going to be there so why councillor Nomamerika Soul and director of beaches and resorts Kithi Ngesi decided to wear their heels in the sand is anyone's guess.

You would certainly expect a director of beaches to know her terrain!

Socialite Purari Gotyana who now works for 360 Degrees Media View cleaned up nicely in a black blazer, blue T-shirt and tight jeans. He looked way different from the Purari who wore one and the same jacket for the whole of last year, with dirty All Stars.

Looking ahead to this weekend, Black Coffee will be at Kwa Ngqoko in New Brighton on Sunday so you'd better not miss out. - Skinnerbek
