Craziest cars on earth take centre stage

CAR makers from all corners of the globe converged in Switzerland for the annual Geneva Motor Show‚ which opened its doors on Tuesday.

Manufacturers will be showcasing their latest motoring wares at the event‚ now in its 84th year.

The Detroit Motor Show was an interesting prelude to what is in store with regards to the automotive design trends in the foreseeable future‚ judging by the hot metal unveiled there.

Big news in our gallery from the show is the unveiling of one of the industry's iconic models‚ in the form of the third-generation Audi TT.

While many would argue that the design is not at all progressive‚ one only needs to look at other icons – such as the Porsche 911 or even the Volkswagen Golf – to get the gist of the train of thought behind this model.

This model will feature a new interior design language for the manufacturer‚ which promises to move the goal posts even further.

While there are a great number of concept models – as is often the highlight at these shows – there is plenty to look forward to in the realm of current production cars.

Take‚ for instance‚ the Ford Focus‚ which has received an extensive front-end makeover‚ all the while adopting new technology.

The facelifted Nissan Juke‚ which has taken the crossover market by storm‚ is also an integral part of the spectacle.

Citroen‚ Peugeot‚ and Toyota are showcasing their joint-venture model that underpins their C1‚ 108‚ and Aygo city cars‚ respectively.

Of course‚ what would the show be without the show-stoppers and exotics‚ with McLaren having its first official‚ up-close-and-personal unveiling of its middle-range sports car – the 650S.

Perhaps unlikely to make it to our market – due to the strange aversion to station wagons – the Jaguar XFR-S Shooting Brake has the news team panting at the thought of a fast express wagon packing 405kW and 680Nm‚ courtesy of a 5.0l V8 supercharged engine driving the rear wheels.

Here's hoping the maker brings a handful of models to our shores. - Lerato Matebese © BDlive 2014
