PE gets 'Beautiful Surprise'

GRAMMY nominated soul singer Tamia Hill will be performing at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre on April 30 as part of her three-city South African tour in April.

Hill, who began singing when she was just six years old at her local church in Ontario, Canada, has quite a following in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The 39-year-old diva, who is now based in Florida in the US, said she was exposed to diverse music by her mother from an early age.

"I feel a connection to all types of music, from soul country to gospel – as long as the song has a good story I'm hooked," Hill said.

She shared that she would be performing hit songs from all her albums and that her band would join her in South Africa.

In her fifth studio album, Beautiful Surprise, she explores various genres of music, blending her "special passion" with each style and making them her own. The album was released in 2012 and last year earned her a Grammy award nomination for best R&B song and best R&B album. It was the first time a Canadian was nominated in the best R&B category of the awards.

Hill has stood out musically ever since her debut album, You Put a Move on My Heart, won her the Top 40 hit on the R&B charts in 1994.

"I'm always going to be that little six-year-old singing into her brush with her mom yelling, 'Tamia, please stop,'" she is quoted as saying on her website. "Music is just a part of me and everything I do; every step that I take. I am thankful and amazed because I still see myself as that little girl with a brush."

Hill has over the years collaborated with a diverse mix of artists including Babyface, Barry White, Missy Elliot, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Gladys Knight and others. She also recorded the number 4 Billboard hot 100 chart hit Into You with rapper Fabolous.

She will start her tour in Cape Town at the grand Arena at Grandwest on April 26, followed by Carnival City on April 28.

Then, on April 30, she will be at the Boardwalk with tickets ranging from R195 to R500.

Bookings have already opened and tickets are available at Computicket, Shoprite, Checkers and all House & Home stores.
