WITH our mild sea temperatures and the mercury rising to the mid-20s, spending the day at the beach is affordable fun in the sun.

Port Elizabeth has over 40km of magnificent golden beaches and all the swimming beaches are patrolled by trained lifeguards.

Sunbathers and water enthusiasts can choose from Bluewater Bay, Kings Beach, Hobie Beach, Pollock Beach, Schoenmakerskop and Maitlands.

The most popular beach in the Bay is Kings Beach which extends from the harbour wall to Humewood Beach with McArthur Baths adjacent. Kings Beach is ideal for swimming, body surfing, sunbathing and long beach walks. Available facilities are the supertubes, a snack bar, a large parking area, change-rooms and a lifeguard centre.

Hobie Beach, situated at Shark Rock Pier in Summerstrand, has rock pools which fall under the cover of the pier. The beach is also ideal for swimming, body surfing and sunbathing. Facilities in the area include restaurants, toilet facilities and a parking area.

Surfing hotspot Pollock Beach is locally known as “Pipe” for ideal surfing conditions. While surfers flock to this beach, there is something for the entire family. There is a rock pool perfect for the little ones and beginner swimmers. The beach has change-room facilities, parking and a roadhouse to purchase ice cream when things heat up.

If you are not one for throngs of sunbathing bodies on the beach then Schoenmakerskop and Maitlands are ideal. Schoenmakerskop has plenty of picnic spots and children can explore the marine life in the rock pools. Maitlands situated at the foot of the famous Maitland dune is perfect for sand-boarding or exercising the calf muscles.

Pack a picnic with all your kids’ favourite treats, not forgetting the sunblock and head down to any one of the beaches to enjoy all that the Bay has to offer in its magnificence.
