Bands unite for rocking tour

IT’S going to be an alternative summer for the Eastern and Southern Cape as rock bands Zebra & Giraffe and Gangs of Ballet get together to hit the road in the region next week. The groups will pool their talents to present shows in Port Elizabeth and a string of coastal resorts.

Zebra & Giraffe founding member Greg Carlin said the collaboration with Gangs of Ballet emerged from his own band’s enthusiasm for the other group.

“We’ve become friends with the Gangs guys over the past year and we love their music and live shows, so we thought it would be a good idea to join forces and do a summer tour together.”

Asked what audiences could expect from the tour, Carlin said fans would be served something fresh – as well as their favourites.

“From our side, we’re adding a few songs into the set that we don’t usually play.

“We’re also playing some brand new material, which is always exciting.”

Carlin said the band would also be playing all the singles they had put out over the years, including The Knife, Arm Yourself, The Inside and End Of The Road.

“We have just come out of studio so we’ll be looking toward early next year to release a new EP.”

Zebra & Giraffe consists of founding members Carlin on vocals, guitar and keyboards and Alan Shenton on lead guitar as well as the newly formed rhythm section of Mike Wright on drums and Stef Henrico on bass and keyboards. Carlin said he believed the double headlining bill was going to be a treat for fans of both bands.

Gangs of Ballet recorded the album yes/no/grey earlier this year and released the second single Don’t Let Me Go to radio nationwide in October.

“We’re really excited about our upcoming coastal tour with Zebra & Giraffe. We finally get to play some of the smaller towns in SA,” Josh Klynsmith said.
