FORMER professional rugby player Scott Matthie officiated at his very first wedding when he married Singapore-based couple, Aimee Deyzel and Dylan Johnson-Goddard at The Plantation wedding venue in Port Elizabeth last month.
The ruggedly good-looking 30-year-old joined Father’s House Church as a full-time trainee pastor from November 1.
Scott played rugby for the Blue Bulls and the Sharks before moving to the UK and representing Leeds Carnegie, Sale Sharks and Manchester.
He returned to South Africa to join the EP Kings last year, and only retired from rugby last month.
Although appearing calm and collected, Scott admits he was very nervous for his first wedding. “My mouth was so dry I needed more water than the groom!
“When the bride walked down the aisle, it was a real tear-inducing moment, and it was amazing to be a part of such a special day in Aimee and Dylan’s lives.”
Scott is not yet married himself, and admitted to the audience during the wedding that he did not have any firsthand practical words of wisdom. Instead he chose to impart marriage advice from the Bible: “It’s all written for us, if you follow the scriptures you can’t go wrong.”
Scott’s decision to join the ministry was a progressive move, rather than an epiphany. He was involved with his church in Durban and the UK, and when he moved to Port Elizabeth, he felt at home with Father’s House Church.
