Star’s passion for plays

SHE may have disappeared from the small screen for a while, but that does not mean Scandal actress Masasa Mbangeni has slacked off.

In fact, the KwaMagxaki-born actress has been busy pursuing the “love of my life” – theatre.

Mbangeni’s Scandal character, Thembeka, is the editor of The Voice who left her position to look for a job in Cape Town and is running away from colleagues Daniel Ntayi (Sello ka Ncube), Mangi Nyati (Kagiso Modupe) and Quinton (Brighton Ngoma).

And while Thembeka does that, Mbangeni has been playing Queenie, a character in Athol Fugard’s Nongogo.

“My fans should not worry as there is still a healthy future for Thembeka on Scandal,” she said. “I had to take time off for my theatre rehearsals. We just finished with Nongogo a week ago and I had the opportunity to act alongside Tony Kgoroge, Desmond Dube, Fana Mokoena and Hamilton Dlamini.”

The play is set in a township shebeen run by shebeen queen, Queenie in the 1950s.

She falls for Johnny (Kgoroge), a travelling salesman who works his way past her protective shell, coaxing her into spilling long- buried secrets.

“We hope that we will be able to tour in South Africa and also get a chance to play in Port Elizabeth,” Mbangeni said.

Soapie fans will have the opportunity to see and interact with Mbangeni and other actors when the eKasi Tour comes to Port Elizabeth.

The crew will be at Cubana on November 29 and at Greenacres the next day.
