Mr and Miss SA make perfect pair

MELINDA Bam is officially off the market, gentlemen. So too, ladies, is Adriaan Bergh. And to make you feel even worse: Bergh, her beau and the 2011 Mr SA, popped the question atop Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper – the world’s tallest building.

The Pretoria-born beauty, crowned Miss SA in 2011 too, said “yes” to Bergh – the man she once said of on Top Billing: “I don’t have any future plans without him.”

And she can be thankful her BFF, Werner Wessels, advised her to pack only her best outfits, just in case Bergh, whose Blue Bulls rugby career was hampered by injuries, popped the question.

And he did. And she obliged, making him the “happiest man alive”, according to a subsequent tweet. Bam’s father Neil, who lives in the United Arab Emirates, was there to witness the moment.

Wessels, also Bam’s stylist, hooked the pair up during their University of Pretoria days. Earlier than that, Wessels was friends with Bergh, before they became friends with Bam in Grade 10 art class at school.

“I’m incredibly happy and excited for the two of them. I couldn’t help but cry. There couldn’t be a more perfect match. It’s even a blessing for me as their friend,” Wessels said yesterday. He said Bam broke the news to him immediately after the proposal; with a picture of the ring accompanied by exclamation marks.

Wessels continued: “I knew he had been looking at rings, and when I heard they were going on a trip to Dubai, I told her it would happen.”

Not until the Miss SA crown was officially Marilyn Ramos’s last December could Bergh and Bam date though, as per the rules of the pageant. But according to Wessels, Bergh was always in the background, supporting her.

When they could eventually freely date, on one famous occasion the pair had to settle for a Steers meal after Bam burnt a planned candlelit dinner.

November is turning out to be a great month for Bam – who this week covers Maxim SA’s second issue.
