MOUSTACHE madness is set to start tomorrow when men around the country put their money where their mouths are.
The Movember campaign, billed as a hairy journey to change the face of men’s health, is directed at raising awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancer.
It is an annual month-long event involving the growing of moustaches during November.
And from doctors to teachers and businessmen to students, men with moustaches will be paying more than just lip service to the cause. They will act as walking, talking billboards for the month to start conversations about the issues of men’s health.
Movember has partnered with the Cancer Association of South Africa, where funds raised from the many campaigns are given to men’s health survivorship and research programmes.
At Chingada’s Mexican Cantina in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, a group of men are part of the growing movement to ensure that Nelson Mandela Bay cements its status as the “mo hair” capital of South Africa.
What started out as a bit of a laugh for the guys at Chingada’s has now become a serious affair. They hope to raise R72000 for the Movember Foundation.
Chingada’s owner, Josh Steenekamp, said: “When the Mexican Cantina opened in 2010 a group of us got together and grew moustaches during Movember. We had so much fun that we decided to do it again in 2011.
“But this time we made the event much bigger, inviting people to register as entrants, thereby raising cash for a very worthy cause,” he said.
In 2011, they raised R18000, a figure which grew to R36000 last year.
“We raise funds through the registration fee of R50,” Steenekamp said. “But it’s not just participants who help raise cash. The public can also make donations.”
