Rebirth of Modern Tribe and all that jazz

WHAT’S in a name? Well, on Saturday I made my way to the renaming of the New Afro Teens at the Boardwalk where they became Modern Tribe, and by the look of the people they attracted to the launch, they are heading for success.

Spin queen Hlubi Hewitt-Coleman came with her husband, Tim, who sported a different hairstyle. Chairwoman of Emfuleni Resorts, Bongi Siwisa, who looked slick in her blue jacket and flower print pants, was there accompanied by husband Lizo.

Skinnerbek nearly choked when I saw gospel singer Mzoxolo Bee! I’ve never seen him attending events except when he is performing. He was with his wife, Saxola, while KQfm station manager, Xolani Yisaka, who is still colour blocking, played it cool when he was offered a seat in front. Instead he decided to take a back seat. I am sure he was a bit uncomfortable in his small size outfit. Dahling – it’s okay to buy your size – you’ll still have your sexy looks!

He arrived with DJ Zol who could not wait to dash out of that place. The emcee of the night was Sylvester Funani – remember the guy who sings with Joyous Celebration? He decided to go down the Steve Kekana route with his dark shades.

Then it was the moment we had all been waiting for. The Modern Tribe made a grand entrance with their music in the background. They were wearing white Ts with their new logo. They still looked so cute but their music has truly matured.

Their manager, Karen Jack – who wore designer jeans and a flower patterned jacket – made sure the guests were well taken care of.

Even though it was raining, I made my way to KwaLunga Jazz Place in Zwide for their chilled Sunday jazz afternoon.

The place was full of prominent businessmen from around the Bay. One of the management members, Nxamile Mdange Yima, made sure the ladies were looked after. They all received three ciders, a braai meal and snacks! Apparently the owners wanted to thank the ladies who are bringing in business to the place.

Bra Khusta Jack was there and he was as bubbly as ever and former MEC of safety and liaison, Thobile Mhlohlo, was also enjoying the vibe with friends.
