Calling all you cake lovers

PORT ELIZABETH is in for a treat this weekend as the South African Cake Decorators' Guild hosts its biannual Dolphin Cake Show in the bay this year, catering for a sweet tooth.

Dolphin Coast branch vice-chairwoman Natasha Tuck said entries for the cake competition close today and the show takes place at St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Walmer on Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

Tuck said the event will be a dream for anyone who loves cake, even those who are not experienced decorators.

"We have a lot in store for the people of Port Elizabeth. There will be cake competitions, cake demonstrations, cupcake decorating competitions, coffee bars and sugar craft stalls," said Tuck.

"The cake competition is divided into eight sections. It consists of a children's, novice section, intermediate, advanced, master class, senior, branch project and an un-iced fruitcake section.

"The children's section, which has a nursery rhyme in 3D theme, will have children designing edible exhibits to fit a sugar paste covered board."

The main sugar craft demonstration day is on Friday, where demo participants get to decorate a cake from scratch, Tuck said.

"There will be demonstrations on covering a cake, a variety of sugar flowers and foliage, compilation of a cake, attendance draws and goody bags. This will be done in a separate hall. This is an all day event and booking is essential because there is limited seating."

"We have people entering the show from as far as Fish Hoek in Cape Town and also East London."

Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer celebrates National Cupcake Day on September 28, an initiative to make and sell cupcakes for a good cause.

"It's a total coincidence. I think it is such a brilliant idea to have a National Cupcake Day though. Cake is for life, not just for birthdays.

"I have never met a cupcake or cake I didn't like. A lot can be resolved with a random act of kindness, but there are some things in life that just require cake.

"It's a passion that is so fulfilling.

"From a hobby to a business, cake is for life!" she said.
