Exhibition to open with cultural event

AWARD-WINNING knitwear designer Laduma Ngxokolo will show his work in Port Elizabeth tomorrow for the first time since he hit the international fashion spotlight.

The exhibition of MaXhosa by Laduma, My Heritage, My Inheritance, will open at 6.30pm on Friday at the Athenaeum in Central with a vibrant cultural evening hosted by television personality and fashion icon Siyabonga Ngwekazi – also known as Scoop.

Johannesburg-based Eastern Cape musical gem Bongeziwe Mabandla will perform, as will the Umle duo of Siphamandla Fete and Siyabonga Radu, poet Ntsika Tyatya, vocalist Ludwe and traditional Xhosa praise singer Mandilakhe.

Entrance to the Friday evening session is R90 but on the second day admission is free all day for the public to view Ngxokolo’s knitwear, paintings and illustrations.

It will also include pieces from Laduma’s friends: Bamanye Ngxale, Thembalethu “Mzala” Manqunyane, Bongo Mei and Vukile Batyi, as well as fellow fashion designer Tina Ngxokolo, who is his sister.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism and CB Entertainment are co-sponsors of the event.

Friday evening’s dress code is MaXhosa by Laduma or ethnic mixed with modern so think: iintsimbi (beadwork,) baca shoes, iqhiya (headwrap), itshoba, whatever suits you!
