THEODOR Herzl brings the adventures of Disney’s The Little Mermaid to Port Elizabeth.
The story takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. To do this, though, she will have to defy her father – the king of the sea – escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she is the girl with the perfect voice, which she has lost.
The show is directed by Robin Williams, one of Port Elizabeth’s most admired theatre personalities. It will run from tomorrow to September 2 at the Theodor Herzl Primary School Hall in Walmer.
“Magic, absolute magic,” is how Williams describes the production. “We have created a show that is colourful, has the most incredible lighting and sound, so technically it’s quite magical and I have very mature young performers in the primary school,” Williams said.
The 60-minute musical is based on the 2008 Broadway production and the Academy Award-winning 1989 animated feature film.
The show, which has been adapted to make it more accessible to younger actors, retains its quick pace.
“This is The Little Mermaid junior, so it is a shorter Broadway musical but the songs are all the same. The scenes, however, aren’t as long because this is for young actors,” Williams said.
The show may have been designed especially for children, but Williams thinks it is suitable for the whole family.
“Little children are just going to fall in love with it … but I think it’s a real a family show,” the director said.
The show’s cast includes almost every pupil at Theodor Herzl Primary School, in one role or another, with Isabella Finestone as the production lead Ariel, Zukhanye Kaliko as Prince Eric and Reinhardt Malherbe, who plays King Triton.
“It’s really fabulous to be in such a wonderful show, all of our teacher are really supportive and it’s really fun to be part of such a dramatic show. The show has such wonderful music.
“We have a fabulous director, Robin, who comes from the high school … doing the show. [This] has been really fun and I’ve loved playing my character [Ariel],” Finestone said.
