The DJ who loves to listen

CUBANA resident DJ Ashley James is best known for keeping partygoers on the dance floor till the wee hours of the morning. He plays everything from old school kwaito to deep house.

The soft-spoken DJ took time out to enjoy lunch at his favourite place, Ocean Basket in Humewood. He chose Ocean Basket because he enjoys the sea view and wanted something different from the red meat he usually has at Cubana.

He ordered a platter for one with mussels, prawns, calamari, fish, rice, chips and salad and washed it down with his favourite drink, Coca-Cola.

I love my job because ... I have always wanted to work in the hospitality industry where I have the opportunity to meet new people of different cultures on a daily basis.

I have a soft spot for ... people with problems. I love listening and trying to assist where I can.

I should have studied ... law (since I speak too much).

I'm listening to ... Chris Walker's greatest hits.

When I was 16, I wish I knew ... there was a beautiful lady, my wife, Janice, waiting for me 16 years down the line.

I'll know I've made it when ... my son, Caleb, who is now two, has made it through varsity and grown into a gentlemen like his dad.

The person who has taught me the most, is ... my grandfather and my older brother, Sheldon.

My music weakness is ... loving all genres of music from back in the day to current. There are so many changes though and keeping up with current music is crazy expensive.

Nothing makes me happier than ... seeing the smile on my son's face after a long day at work. It's like he hasn't seen me in months.

I absolutely hate ... liars and people who cannot deliver even after setting high expectations.

I am saving to buy ... a black Porsche used in the movie Bad Boys (the first Bad Boys).

I share my life with ... my amazingly beautiful wife and adorable son.

I can't go a day without ... thanking God for that day.

In 10 years I see myself ... successfully owning a Cubana somewhere along the coast or in one of our African states.

DJ Ashley James ranks his favourite places in the metro:

• I spend lots of my time at Cubana. They serve the best ribs and chicken wings around.
• When I have the chance of chilling, I take my wife to Europa.
• They have the best pizza and I find it very intimate.
• I also go to the Coachman. They are great for a delicious steak.
• Also News Cafe because The Boardwalk has a good vibe and Primi Piatti is not bad at all.
• We take my son to the penguin play park at Samrec near Pine Lodge.
• Most of our shopping is done at Walmer Park Shopping Centre.
