COMEDIAN Khanyisa Bunu will represent the Eastern Cape at the SA Comic’s Choice Awards next month.
“I am very excited about this nomination, especially because I am the only female amongst four guys. I have been nominated in the Savanna audience choice award category with Sifiso Nene, Mashabela Galane and Thapelo Tips Seemise,” she said.
Bunu, a former primary school teacher, was born in Whittlesea. She said while she always had a comedic streak, she only took it seriously after entering the So You Think You Are Funny television stand-up comedy competition.
“People loved my material and after I was eliminated I packed my bags for the city of lights. I started by performing in small clubs and in no time I was getting booked for bigger events. People love my work because I make such intelligent jokes,” she said.
Bunu said she was inspired by Eugene Khoza. “He is one of my favourite comedians. I love his intelligent comedy. He is a natural and one can learn a lot from him,” she said.
Her ultimate dream is to be a movie maker.
“At some stage I want to produce a series that will tackle our day to day living. I have just finished writing a book called Umbhodamo [Chaos] which will be used for learning in Grade 9 for Eastern and Western Cape next year,” she said.
And while she is no longer a teacher, she is still involved in education and tries to support under-performing schools around Gauteng.
The awards will be held at Montecasino in Johannesburg on August 24.
