Scrambling to get on her bike

NELSON Mandela Bay road cyclist Anriette Schoeman won the annual Cape Argus Cycle Tour for the seventh time this year. She received a motion of congratulations from the National Assembly for her achievement when she bettered her own personal record of six victories.

This is but one of her many achievements this year. For one, she started mountain biking and made a spectacular solo appearance when she won all three stages of the Knysna MTB Tour in extreme wet and muddy conditions last month.

Schoeman, who took two weeks off from training because she had the flu, met La Femme for lunch at Friends and Blends in Walker Drive, saying they made one of the best scrambled eggs dishes.

Schoeman enjoyed what she described as “famous ostrich eggs” on toast with coffee, saying she loved having breakfast, no matter what time of the day it was.

I love cycling because it’s the only way I know. I fell in love with the sport when I was 15 and I’ve made it a way of life.

It makes me feel free and when I’m on my bike life becomes very uncomplicated.

I’ll know I’ve made it when I have the rainbow stripes [awarded to a world champion] on my sleeve. My main mission in life is to inspire people to be the best they can possibly be.

The person who has taught me the most is my coach and friend, Alex Cooper. When I started cycling he helped and taught me so much and he is still my mentor and helps with my coaching.

I have a soft spot for animals. I am a proud ambassador for the charity organisation Barking Mad. I try to create awareness of the organisation so that people support it. They are unfortunately so dependent on it.

I should have studied architecture. I started but could not finish my studies and chose to ride full-time instead. I don’t have any regrets, but I would have liked to get it over and done with.

I’m listening to Rihanna, Muse and Adele. I like any upbeat music and I love the latest releases.

When I was 16, I wish I knew how unfair life sometimes could be. But I learnt quite early in life. Sometimes doing your best is not enough, you have to do what it takes.

My music weakness is listening to music full volume.

Nothing makes me happier than spending time with people close to my heart and being in the ocean on my surfboard or on my bike.

My favourite items of clothing are my hoodies. I have all colours, designs and brands.

I absolutely hate being cold. Sometimes my “job” requires me to ride in rainy and freezing conditions and I must say I really don’t enjoy it.

I am saving to buy my next Volkswagen.

I share my life with my dog, Milo.

I can’t go a day without my Ipad and coffee. I love coffee. The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is have a cup of coffee.

I don’t plan my life too far ahead, but I would like people to remember my character and what I stood for one day, not for what I have achieved on my bike. I want people to realise that things are only impossible until it’s done.

My favourite places in the metro are … As a kid I loved the oceanarium, I love our beaches and I enjoy going to Walmer Park Shopping Centre.
