WHEN in Morgan Bay one thing you must do is hook up with local artist Wayne Blom who also acted as a tour guide for our visit, keeping up congenial – and often hilarious – banter throughout our day together.
Specialising in portraits and paintings of the Nguni cattle for which the Wild Coast is renowned, Wayne moved to the village two-and-a-half years ago and is now in high demand for his art works.
Knocking off the average painting in just more than a day and a half, Wayne has seen some of his works find their way to the US, while others can be found in collections all over South Africa.
Amiable by nature, Wayne invited us to his studio close to the Mitford Hotel, where we marvelled at paintings of the prolific wild dagga plants currently in full bloom in the area and the realistic caricatures of sports personalities which he created for a charity event. If you are in the area and would like to see Wayne’s stunning artworks – two of which are on display in the bar at the Mitford – give him a call on 074 236 3800.
