Winter exercise: fat and crime fighter

DURING the winter months it easy to let your fitness and training regime slide: the lure of hearty comfort food and staying indoors while snuggled on the couch watching TV and enjoying a hot beverage all seem so comforting.

However there are two major problems with this scenario.

1. While you’re snuggling on the couch and neglecting your training, your body is becoming lazier, your metabolic rate decreases due to lack of exercise and you pick up a few extra kilograms.

2. Criminals do not go into hibernation during the winter months. They don’t cease with criminal activity just because they are getting too cold or it’s raining or it is getting too dark.

Actually these are the ideal conditions for them to operate as they lurk in the shadows waiting for the opportune moment to strike. The opportune moment is when you get comfortable, lazy and let your guard down thus we need to embrace the cold instead of avoiding it.

This will be the ideal time for you to change your training programme or add something new to your regime like joining your local Krav Maga club. Here you will not only get sufficient exercise but you will also learn to protect yourself.

Tips for exercise during the winter.

Dress in layers: Dress in layers that you can easily remove as soon as you start to sweat and then put back on as needed. First, put on a thin layer of synthetic material, which draws sweat away from your body i.e. compression vest. Avoid cotton, which stays wet next to your skin. Next, add a layer of fleece or wool for insulation. Top this with a waterproof, breathable outer layer of clothing. A heavy jacket or vest may cause you to overheat if you’re exercising hard.

It is import to find the correct combination for you especially if most of your training is done outside.

Protect your hands, feet and ears: When it’s cold, blood flow is concentrated on your body’s core, leaving your hands, feet and ears vulnerable. Wearing gloves, beanie and an extra pair of socks would help a lot in keeping your body insulated. As you begin to sweat you could always remove the gloves and beanie.

Buddy Up: Make a pact with a friend to encourage each other and commit to set training times. This encouragement will go a long way towards achieving your exercise goals and objectives. It is also safer if you train in pairs for various reasons, especially outdoors.

Be Positive: There are some excellent advantages to exercising in winter. Winter is the ideal time to lose weight, so when summer arrives you have your bikini body and you can enjoy the lazy summer days on the beach.
