Winelands comes to Bay for sparkling show

WINE lovers, clear your diaries for next weekend – The Wine Show is bringing the winelands to Nelson Mandela Bay’s doorstep once again.

This fourth edition of the show, in the sparkling setting of the Boardwalk Convention Centre, will host about 50 exhibitors, mostly wine estates, but also showcasing specialist wine glasses and decanters, olives and olive oil from award-winning Morgenster, brandies from Blaauwklippen and some other interesting beverages.

Wine Extra magazine will host free tutored tastings in the “wine theatre” designed to entertain while helping you to learn what to look for in a chenin, pinotage or bubbly.

There’s a veritable A to Z of wine estates at the show, from up and coming shiraz specialists Beau Belle through to historic estates such as Zandvliet, also famed for their shiraz.

Big names like Simonsig, Tokara, Fairview and JC Le Roux will be there alongside newer and more boutique establishments such as Gabrielskloof, Ernie Els, Whalehaven and Raka.

Wine will be on sale at the show, with a “sip ‘n ship” service for delivery to your door, and for those who’ve over-indulged, Good Fellas will offer a complimentary drive-you-home service for the last three hours of each show day.

The show runs on Friday from 5pm to 9pm, Saturday from 12am to 9pm and Sunday from 12am to 4pm.

Tickets are R80 in advance from Computicket, or R90 at the door, or R150 for a weekend pass.

See the competition alongside today’s column to win a pair of tickets plus a bottle of Whalehaven pinot noir 2009, the whole package worth R300.

If you would rather cuddle up in front of the telly or computer, be sure to catch season 2 of MasterChef South Africa, into its third week on DStv, to follow the flops and triumphs of the next batch of aspiring super-chefs.

Contestants will be cooking with the Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve range and for those following at home, there is an online food-and-wine pairing course with prizes of Le Creuset cookware to be won. Short clips of master classes with Nederburg cellar master Razvan Macici are posted weekly on the website, za/competition, and participants can join in any time and catch up on past classes, answer a question and enter the competition.
