FANS of KwaDwesi-born musician MXO can expect some old funk, freshness and freebies at the MTN Sama Concert tomorrow.
MXO, whose real name is Mxolisi Lokwe, is introducing his new single, Zinathi, and will also perform a collaboration with Ringo Madlingozi’s son, Phila, who plays the role of Zolile in SABC1’s Intersexions.
He promised some of his old funk, with a twist of freshness at the concert.
“I am very happy to be part of this event. It always feels good to perform at home,” MXO said.
He will also be giving away 15 freebies, including DVDs.
MXO, a contestant on M-Net reality TV competition Survivor South Africa: Maldives in 2011, worked with Grammy nominee Jamie Catto on his concept band, 1 Giant Leap, which brought together artists from around the world. “Life has been very hectic on my side and we are busy pushing on downloads, which is the big thing in the music industry at the moment.
“I have also formed a band called Peppercorns with the UK’s Bev Roberts. It is a mixture of soft jazz, big brass sound and hip- hop,” he said. “I am also working on a video which will be shot in the next week or so.”
Nearer to home, MXO has worked with Jimmy Dludlu and Bongo Maffin’s Stoan.
“I will also be working with fresh talent like [Bay afro jazz band] Take Note and [Bay performer] Gino [Lee],” he said.
“It would be great if we can get a lot of support from our province and be the ambassadors of our province,” he said.
