Wide variety of accommodation options on the outskirts of Plett

WHILE Plett has a wide variety of accommodation from B & Bs to self-catering apartments and up-market hotels, there are quite a few options available on the outskirts of the holiday town which are well worth consideration.

Over the years we have tried quite a few: Moonshine on Whiskey Creek with its individual forest cabins, swimming pool and jacuzzi; a charming, well-equipped A Frame cottage on Heatherhill Farm near Keurboomstrand, and, more recently, A Dam Fine Cottage in the Crags.

At Moonshine you can choose from a number of hand-crafted wooden chalets, each with an outdoor braai/ barbecue area. Everything is provided for self-catering and each unit has an indoor wood-burning fireplace. A bonus for those looking for a complete getaway is that there are no distracting TVs.

What it costs: Depending on the season, from R550 for two people to R990 for six people and upwards.Website: www.whiskeycreek.co.za

Heatherhill is situated in picturesque countryside only 9km from Plett. The farm offers magnificent views of the bay and Tsitsikamma mountains. The beautiful beaches of Keurboomstrand are 2km down the lane.

The accommodation is an open plan loft. The loft sleeps two to four sharing. The kitchenette is fully equipped and there is a full en-suite bathroom. Satellite TV, DVD and radio are provided.

What it costs:From R300 per night depending on length of stay and season.Contact: Peter Martin Tel : (044) 534-8040 Cell : 082-775-9154

A Dam Fine Cottage has the advantage of being pet-friendly (be prepared for daily visits from the family dog if you don’t take your own). It is fully fenced and overlooking a small dam covered with colourful lilies. There’s also a canoe to take a gentle paddle.

While a Dam Fine Cottage is well-equipped in that there is a spacious fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster, there’s no cupboard space for food you would prefer to keep out of the fridge. For those looking for a complete getaway there are no diversions like a TV. The cottage has a downstairs living area with kitchen and bathroom (shower only) and an upstairs bedroom that can sleep four.

There’s also a private deck and braai facilities.

What it costs:From R400 for the cottage per night, depending on season.Website: www.adamfinecottage.co.za
