ALGOAFM power couple Mio Khondleka and his wife, Queenie Grootboom, are swapping the coast for the bright lights of Gauteng to work at a new radio station.

Khondleka, AlgoaFM’s programme manager and Saturday lunchtime presenter, and Grootboom are believed to be South Africa’s only married on-air duo. They started working at Algoa FM in April last year.

Khondleka joins PowerFM as music manager, while Grootboom, who presents the weekday 7pm to 10pm Algoa FM slot, will present a programme on the new station.

“The challenge of being part of a team that starts a new radio station, in a primary radio market, is very appealing to me,” Khondleka said.

“Music is my passion and serving as music manager is something I am looking forward to, especially considering that Johannesburg is known as the hub of media.”

The couple said they had learnt a lot about the industry in the time they had been at Algoa FM.

“There is a spirit that resonates here at AlgoaFM that you can’t find anywhere else. This past year was a great learning experience,” Khondleka said.

AlgoaFM operations director Alfie Jay said the two had made a “solid contribution” to the station.

“Mio is a good radio man whose leadership qualities and keen music sense have impacted positively at the station, while Queenie’s lovable spirit resonates warmly with AlgoaFM’s listeners.

“There was never any doubt that sooner or later they would be snatched up by the primary radio market, who are constantly scouting for good talent.”

Jay said they would announce plans for replacements soon.
