STRONG winds and rain did not take the bite out of the popular Chilli Festival at the weekend.
Hundreds attended the three-day annual festival at Morewag Primary School in Harrower Road, Port Elizabeth.
Festival organiser Cathy van der Merwe said the festival was a success despite the bad weather.
But she could not give an indication of how many people attended the festivities by late last night.
“Everything went extremely well. The tent started to fill up in spite of the rain [yesterday]. We had visitors who came from as far as Bloemfontein and George,” she said.
The annual festival ended with a chilli-eating competition yesterday, with chillies imported from George because of a chilli shortage in the Bay.
The winner, Anthony Heyns of Sydenham, ate 23 fiery habanero chillies to nab the title, trophy and R1000 in cash. – Hendrick Mphande
