THE town of Cradock is this weekend hosting its first annual Karoo Food Festival – and hopes to turn it into an event that will eventually spread to other Karoo towns.
“The festival, which started on Thursday, is for anyone who loves cooking, eating and the Karoo,” said Lisa Ker, of the town’s iconic Die Tuishuise and Victoria Manor hotel, and a member of the organising team.
“Our aim is to celebrate Karoo food, inspire locals and visitors, and boost the local economy,” she said. “The time is right to turn the Karoo into a culinary destination – we’re already renowned for produce like our wonderful Karoo lamb.”
The event is being held with input from Slow Food Karoo, which helps protect culinary traditions by encouraging the enjoyment of good food and wine, particularly local food that is responsibly produced.
Gordon Wright, who started the Karoo chapter of Slow Food at his restaurant at the Andries Stockenstrom Guesthouse in Graaff-Reinet, is one of the chefs visiting Cradock to share his expertise.
Gordon will do a food and spirit pairing event at Victoria Manor tonight at 7pm.
“We also have other speakers and events from all over the Karoo, and more than 30 stalls to browse through.”
