READER favourites Kelly and Stefan Ferreira won The Herald Bride and Groom 2012 competition last night at a cocktail finale held at Thunzi Bush Lodge.
All the bride and groom finalists, chosen from hundreds of entrants, were dressed to the nines and eager to find out who had won the big prize of an ocean cruise, Defy appliances, jewellery, hair styling, a photo shoot, flowers and other prizes.
Kelly, nee Wicks, 28, and Stefan, 31, live in Lorraine and were popular winners in the readers’ choice competition running in The Herald over the past five weeks.
Last night’s judging panel consisting of former Methodist bishop George Irvine – married for 52 years – the winners of the 2011 competition, Yolanda and Nkosinathi Tshambo, and La Femme editor Gillian McAinsh agreed with the readers.
“We are overwhelmed. We have been enjoying married life and we make it a point never to go to bed angry,” the Ferreiras said.
“The key to a happy marriage is lots of laughter and lots of communication. We have also learned that love and happiness are not found by seeking them for yourself but rather by giving them to others.”
Stefan works for Sun International, and the couple started dating when they visited a jazz tavern in New Brighton as part of a marketing indaba
Kelly said her pupils at Victoria Park High School, where she is an English teacher, have supported her all the way.
Their photographer, Judith Doubell, has also won a prize from Kodak Express Photo Excellence at Walmer Park for capturing the special bond between the couple on their wedding day at Green Fountain Farm in Port Alfred in June last year.
The Tshambos said winning the competition last year had brought them much closer together.
Sadly, one of the 12 finalists, Siphokazi and Sibongile Dimbaza, could not attend the event as they were involved in a car accident earlier. All 12 finalists and photographers received hampers.
The Ferreiras will now be invited to model their wedding day outfits at The Herald Bridal Fair in May.
