Cartoon fan Cliff loves new role

SOUTH African radio presenter and Idols judge Gareth Cliff has lent his voice to the hit TV animation show Disney’s Phineas and Ferb. Animation fan Cliff is just one of the latest of a worldwide legion of celebrity guest stars including football star David Beckham, Ben Stiller, Michael J Fox, Selena Gomez and Slash to be featured in the popular show.

“It’s loads of fun to be in a cartoon,” says Cliff. “I’m not at all embarrassed that I love cartoons. They’re a brilliant and rather inoffensive way of making important social commentary public. You can get away with a lot.”

Cliff lists The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park as his favourite cartoons.

Although Cliff is blond and clean-shaven and the Ducky MoMo salesman character he voices is dark-haired with a strange goatee, there are a lot of similarities between the popular DJ and his character in the Bafta-nominated and Emmy award-winning animated comedy series.

They are both fond of the casual hoodie, they share the same slouched posture and they share the same brand of cynical humour.

“He’s a trinket seller at a flea market where he meets Candice, Phineas and Ferb’s sister, voiced by US actress Ashley Tisdale,” says Cliff.

“He’s sarcastic, facetious and a bit annoying so it wasn’t too hard to get into character.”

Cliff says that his favourite character in the series is Ferb or Perry – Secret Agent P. “He is so cool. When I go to sleep at night I always imagine that I am going to wake up as a superhero or a secret agent. It never happens, but it’s worth trying.”

Characters in the series are voiced by stars all over the world, “personalising” the show for local audiences. British talk show host Jonathan Ross plays the same character as Cliff for UK audiences.

Cliff said: “I really enjoy Phineas and Ferb, so I am thrilled to be part of such an iconic series. Doing a voice- over cameo is a first for me.”

The episode premieres in South Africa at 9.45am on Saturday March 16 on Disney XD (DStv Channel 304).
