KWAZAKHELE singer Pu2ma Tiso will perform alongside Grammy Award- winning songstress Jill Scott at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. The 32-year-old will also share the stage with artists such as Kirk Whalum, Jimmy Dludlu, Thandiswa Mazwai and Zonke Dikana, who is also from Port Elizabeth.
The two-day festival starts on April 5 .
“I cannot believe it. I come from a poor background and will now be performing with such music greats,” Tiso said.
Tiso, now based in Johannesburg, said her performance at the festival would also put Port Elizabeth on the global music map.
“I have never thought a girl like me would ever share a stage with Jill Scott.”
Scott, born in the United States, has made a reputation for being a classic, thought-provoking artist through her multi-platinum selling debut album. Some of her hits include A Long Walk and Hate On Me.
Scott has also appeared in movies, including Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?
For someone who has been in the music industry for such a short time, Tiso is already a sought-after jazz musician in South Africa.
She has performed in China and at the 2010 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz.
The following year she was hand- picked by jazz legend Hugh Masekela to perform with him at the Joy of Jazz.
Tiso said the opportunity to sing at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival did not come easy.
“One of the directors of the festival heard me sing twice with Hugh and was very impressed. He told me he would include me in the line-up.”
Besides preparing for her Cape Town performance, Tiso is working on a second album.
“The album is about my life experiences. I’ve grown vocally and it shows in this offering.”
The album, due to be released in September, is being produced by Thapelo Kgomo.
He has also produced for Simphiwe Dana, the late Jabu Khanyile and Thandiswa Mazwai.
