Glitzy gowns shine at gala

DESIGNER Johan Wolmarans was the man of the night at The Herald and Reach for a Dream’s Wear Your Dream competition gala finale, with two of the three big prizes going to designs from his studio. Victoria Park High School matriculant Tanya Naidoo won the designer: bought category in design by Wolmarans, and Daniele Terblanche of Willow Academy won the designer: hired category for her dress, also by Wolmarans. The gala on Friday saw Brandwag High School matriculant Alyssa Fouché win the homemade category in a lace dress made by her mother to her own design.

Naidoo said her glittering champagne and gold sheath with high neck and covered shoulders was her “dream dress”: “I felt like a princess and Johan turned my dream into a reality”.

The designer category was hotly contested with 15 dresses, while the homemade and designer categories each had eight dresses vying for a prize package worth R8 000 per winner.

Wolmarans rocked the ramp with nine of the 15 designer: bought finalists and two in the designer: hired category choosing dresses from Designs by Johan to make their matric farewell special.

Reach for a Dream regional director Inge Human said it was a “wonderful” evening.

“It’s a real celebration of life, which we stand for, and it raised much needed funds for the foundation,” Human said.

The finalists in this year’s Wear Your Dream matric dress competition each had a chance to showcase their matric farewell numbers to a full-house audience of more than 250 guests at Running Waters Wedding and Conference Venue in Kragga Kamma.

Singer and entertainer Niqui Cloete-Barrass hosted the evening with celebrity guest Janez Vermeiren. And the mostly female audience queued up after the prize-giving for a chance to have their picture taken with the Top Billing male presenter and model.

A judging panel of The Herald Spec-Savers Miss Port Elizabeth 2011 Nandipha Mnuna, former Reach for a Dream category winner Ashleigh Botha and fashion journalist Barbara Robertson chose the winners. Naidoo, Terblanche and Fouche each win:
