SIHLANGULE Aids Networking Organisation’s Zodwa Plaatjie finally opened the door to her new container from where she would now teach the over 40 children of Sihlangule’s creche, Lukhanyiso Preschool.
Last week, La Femme reported that Plaatjie had inspired NMMU students to raise money for her organisation.
At the opening last week on Friday, Plaatjie said the container could not have been purchased without teamwork.
“It is because of all of you that Sihlangule is now on the map. It is because of teamwork and working together that we now have this container [for the creche]. I am glad to say that next year I will be doing social work at NMMU,” she said.
Sihlangule received the container from NMMU’s student governance and development department after they had raised, with the help of societies at the university, more than R600000 through various fundraising activities.
The container boasts a newly painted exterior and interior, built-in shelves, a teacher’s table, a new electricity box, a wooden floor and carpeting, a whiteboard, stationery and new books.
At the opening of the container, the department’s Sandile Mpepo said: “We wanted to do something sustainable [for Sihlangule] and we thought: ‘How about we try to build a creche?’ At the beginning it seemed impossible and we didn’t have any money. But with the eight societies we work with, we started fundraising and we put the money together”.
