PARENTING may not come with a manual, but Port Elizabeth mother and primary school teacher, Gerda Saayman has developed a DVD that may come close.

In June last year, Saayman started working on an English and Afrikaans DVD especially developed for educating and teaching mothers different methods of baby stimulation.

“I’ve made an intensive study of the developmental milestones of babies 0-12-months-old and developed activities around it,” said Saayman.

The DVD which comes in a set of two with the first series for 0-3 months and 3-6 months, and the second series for 6-9 months and 9-12-month-olds, provides practical activities with real babies that the mother can learn.

“It gives the parent or caregiver practical advice and information on how to teach your child concepts in a playful way,” she said.

Having used the activities with her own children and experienced how they benefited from them, Saayman assures that the DVD will stimulate your baby’s brain, senses, imagination, creativity and muscles.

“And all of this is designed in such a way that the mother or caregiver can simulate the activity with explanations about the activity while doing it with the baby,” said Saayman.

Lynette van Wyk, owner and workshop leader of Toddlers Workshop said that the Edubaby DVD is “a good product as it provides hands-on advice for parents”.

“While it helps with emotional and mental development, it is also fun”, said Lynette.

The practical nature of the DVD ensures that even mothers or caregivers who are non-English/Afrikaans speakers are able to interact and learn with the activities.

“If they do not understand English or Afrikaans that well, they can follow the activities by watching them on the television as the activities were carried out on real babies,” she said.

“While the DVD may cost R150 or R250 for the set, the results are long-term as the activities are aimed at holistic development.”
