Port Elizabeth choir disbands

The Port Elizabeth Oratorio Choir [PEOC] has disbanded after 63 years.
At a special general meeting, the members of the PEOC voted overwhelmingly to disband after failing to attract sufficient male voices that would ensure the correct voice balance needed in the choir. The PEOC was established by Robert Selley in 1948 by the amalgamation of the PE Ladies Singers with the PE Male Voice Choir.
In its heyday, the choir performed regularly in and around Port Elizabeth with Handel’s Messiah becoming a favourite annual event.
In recent years, the PEOC has performed Petite Messe Solennelle, famous Aria’s from the Opera, an Evening of Anthems and many others bringing well known soloists to Port Elizabeth. The choir also supported other choral singers at Last Night of the Proms and Songs of Praise.
Sadly, the lack of male voices forced the choir to end what had become a proud and honourable tradition.
A thanksgiving service to which all members past and present are invited will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Central from 6p.m on Sunday, October 16. Safe parking is available on the Market Square.
