YES, the bride was beautiful, but when HSH Prince Albert II married Charlene Wittstock, the star of the show was her Giorgio Armani wedding gown.
The bride wore an Armani delight featuring 40 000 Swarovski crystals, 20 000 mother of pearl teardrops, 30 000 stones in gold shades. It took 2 500 hours to make, with the embroidery taking 700 hours, on to 130m of off-white silk. The train alone was 6m.
The July 1 wedding was watched with not quite as much fervour as April’s royal wedding between Kate Middleton and HRH Prince William in the UK, but South Africans were quite keen as this country can claim Wittstock as its own.
In her sumptuous boat neck gown, her hair pulled back in a swirling French twist and with only the lightest touch of makeup, Wittstock seemed to channel some of the late Princess Grace’s effortless elegance.
