Unique ‘rainbow’ quartet at The Barn

A blend of music that stretches across boundaries to include traditional, jazz, Latin American and world genres is on the diary for this weekend’s Jazz’Afro Sunday show at the PE Opera House.

Satma-nominated artist Mahesh Narotam is the driving force behind the band, which will present the Mahesh Narotam Quartet in Concert at 5pm on Sunday at the Barn Theatre. The other three members are Janet Sklar on violin and tanpura, Lubabalo Luzipo on keyboards and his son Chetan Narotam on tabla. “My band and I are ready to entertain as we journey through our unique blend of music. Our members represent the rainbow nation and our music is an extension of that,” Narotam said. “It will be very different from my previous concerts in that it will include traditional, jazz, Latin American, world music and so on. “My opening piece will be a traditional evening raag composition, followed by the famous

jazz standard Summertime, and my new composition Mandela Shuffle in a bossa nova rhythm. “Next is a jazzy version of another raag composition followed by two of my compositions off my album Sacred Moments, namely Indian Samba. “Then we will play a John Mclaughlin composition followed by another one of my new compositions yet to be titled . . . and we may throw in another piece or two to end the evening with aplomb!” Further information and tickets from Cingiwe on (041) 585-1300, or e-mail: cingiwe.skosana@gmail.com or Narotam on 082-556-9847.
