Ladysmith Black Mambazo in PE

Ladysmith Black Mambazo will be in Port Elizabeth to perform at the Opera House on Friday and Saturday, October 21 and 22. The show starts at 7pm and will feature the famous South African a capella vocal group, who have been singing together for more than 50 years. Founded in 1964 by Joseph Shabalala, the most famous African a capella vocal group has held onto Isicathamiya. The award-winning Eastern Sounds Chorale, formerly Transnet Port Choir, conducted by Dr Makhaya Mjana and Legato, will be the curtain- raiser. To date, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has won more Grammy Awards than any other person or group from the continent of Africa, winning three Grammys and 15 nominations. The story of their collaborations includes Salif Keita, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh Groban, Emmylou Harris, Melissa Etheridge and many others. Their film work includes a featured appearance in Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker video and Spike Lee’s Do It A Cappella. They've provided soundtrack material for Disney’s The Lion King, Part II, as well as Eddie Murphy’s Coming To America, Marlon Brando’s A Dry White Season, Sean Connery’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, James Earl Jones’s Cry The Beloved Country and Clint Eastwoods Invictus. A film documentary titled On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom, the story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was nominated for an Academy Award. They have appeared on Broadway and have been nominated for Tony Awards and have won a Drama Desk Award . In more recent popular culture, they have been part of such shows as The Family Guy and the movie Mean Girls (“But you love Ladysmith Black Mambazo”).
