EL beauty needs votes to win

East London beauty Taneille Schrier is one of 30 semifinalists for this year’s Miss Commonwealth SA pageant.

The “Face of Vincent Park” was encouraged to enter Miss Commonwealth by a contestant she met in the Vincent Park competition. The pageant empowers women to bring about change to communities in need.

“What I like about this pageant is that it is not just about beauty, they don’t focus on your looks. They want to see that you are making a difference in your community,” she said.

At this level contestants are assigned to charities to help raise funds for them. “It is also one of their objectives to raise funds for charitable causes and I like that.

“As a young person it is easy to feel like you are not doing anything inspiring but this has changed my life,” she said. Schrier has been assigned to Pink Drive – a breast cancer organisation that currently runs two breast check units and three educational cars. The cars travel around the country bringing education, physical examinations and training in self-examinations to disadvantaged communities.

“I feel I am doing so much more than staying at home and studying. I’ve met so many businesspeople who are willing to give donations and it’s fun to go around talking to people about this charity,” she said.

Next Friday, the semifinalists will gather in Johannesburg.

“We will have workshops and a conference. We will meet the judges and all the other contestants.

“The judges want to know us personally and not judge us based on our looks. From there, they will select the top 15, which will be announced next month,” she said.

The former Cambridge High School pupil said making it to the top 15 would mean a lot to her.

“I want to meet all the relevant people that can help me make a difference in society. This competition is a huge deal for me and I don’t take it lightly,” said the 20-year-old.

To help her win the 2015 Miss Commonwealth pageant, she needs as many votes from the public as possible.

To support her, SMS ‘Taneille Schrier’ to 35554. Each SMS costs R3 and a percentage of this will go towards the Pink Drive charity.

The top 15 will compete in the grand finale in Johannesburg during September. The winner of the pageant will go to London later this year to compete at the Miss Commonwealth international pageant. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
