Couple mark 25th anniversary with recreation of wedding day

Since their wedding 25 years ago featured in Weekend Post – when Rev Deric Derbyshire officiated at perhaps the city’s first biker-themed wedding at St Peter’s Congregational Church in Charlo – little has changed between Richard and Cherry McManus.

Last weekend Cherry and Richard celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by going back in time and recreating the wedding they had on January 10, 1990 – and the “running reverend” Rev Deric Derbyshire once more conducting the ceremony.

The couple, who started dating in 1983, had two children together before they got married.

“We were travelling down Cape Road when Richard mumbled something. He said, ‘Well we’ve got two kids now so I guess it’s about time we tie the knot.’ I replied, ‘Okay, what kind of wedding do you want?’ He said, ‘I’d love to have a biker wedding’,” Cherry remembered.

Cherry, born in East London, and Richard, born in England, met through Richard’s brother and instantly fell in love.
