Iron resolve shines in ‘Silk and Steel’

PORT Elizabeth’s Galerié NOKO has pulled off a considerable coup by attracting several star women artists fresh from the FNB Joburg Art Fair. Silk and Steel curates up-and-coming young local artists Emma Minkley, Tanisha Bhana and Nombulelo Dassie alongside established international A-list artists Mary Sibande (Standard Bank young artist of the year 2013), Florine Demosthene (2014 Dakar Biennale guest artist) and Nomusa Makhubu.

Port Elizabeth is not known as a mecca of contemporary fine art. On the plus side, this is something that the current exhibition at Galerié NOKO seeks to put right.

The eight artists on show represent a fair sample of the changing face of fine art in South Africa. Like it or not, photography seems to be taking the lion’s share of collectors’ money as investment in digital photographic prints improve.
